Oviedo

Originally inhabited by the Timacuan Native Americans, Oviedo was formally incorporated in 1925. Homesteaders made this area home just after the Civil War, settling around Lake Jesup. Named after the original city in Spain, Oviedo is now known for chickens that roam the downtown area. As unofficial mascots, the chickens stop traffic as they cross the roads and are featured on town event posters and memorabilia. Currently in a growth spurt, the city is undergoing a downtown expansion project. Oviedo on the Park will be the new town center to include residential living, restaurants, retail and a planned amphitheater.

With plenty to do, residents can enjoy the local events and entertainment options. In the winter, the families of Oviedo can sled, slide and play in 55 tons of snow shipped to the city at Snow Mountain at Winterfest. In February, the City of Oviedo celebrates Fun Day in the Park with a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a featured speaker, music and entertainment. One of the fastest-growing festivals in central Florida is the Taste of Oviedo, drawing more than 30,000 people annually. The festival features fantastic food from area restaurants, displays from local artists, a student art show, car show, home and garden show, live entertainment, a citrus and celery cook off and more.

Oviedo local attractions include the Lukas Nursery Butterfly Encounter, Central Florida’s family-owned plant nursery and butterfly farm. The Twin Rivers Golf Club is an 18-hole jewel and in nearby Chuluota, Big Oaks Ranch offers a 700-acre cattle ranch with hayrides, barbeques, nature walks and fishing. Enjoy an airboat ride on Lake Jesup, flying across the water at 45mph. If a slower pace is what you crave, go for a bike ride or a walk at the Cross Seminole Trail. Of course, the legendary Florida beaches offer endless days enjoying the water, boating, swimming or sunbathing during summer days.

Just minutes northeast from Orlando, residents can enjoy plenty of great events and things to do in this nearby family-friendly hub. Traditional events include the springtime Bluegrass Festival, summertime movies in the park, and community hosted events. Orlando also offers many theme parks, including Disney World, Epcot Center, water parks and Discovery Cove. Orlando offers a diverse range of leisure activities that residents will find something for everyone in the family. Events in Orlando and the surrounding areas include the Bob Marley Reggae Festival in February, Mardi Gras at Universal Studios, Rock the Universe in September, Halloween Horror Nights and the Beer Festival in autumn months.

Whether it's the diverse recreational opportunities, the friendly people or the beautiful weather, Oviedo affords a quality of life second to none.
